How long does it take to charge an electric car?

The speed at which your electric vehicle (EV) will charge can vary depending on the battery size in your car and the EV charger you use.

Home charging EV stations typically charge at 3.6kW or 7kW, which gives approximately 15-30 miles of range per hour of charge. Though faster charging points are available – providing between 60-200 miles of range in just 20-30 minutes – most domestic properties have a single-phase power outlet, which means the maximum charging rate is 7kW.

With a 7kW electric vehicle charging station at home, an electric car with a 60kWh battery usually takes less than 8 hours to charge from empty to full.

Using the same charge point, a vehicle with a 40kWh battery will go from empty to full in 6 hours, whereas a 75kWh battery will take almost twice as long.

How much does it cost to install an electric car charging station at home?

Electric vehicle charger installation can cost several hundred pounds – but there are huge cost-savings to be had by EV drivers!

For instance, if you were to drive 10,000 miles per year, you could save up to £1,400 on fuel by simply switching from petrol to electric. That would cover the cost of installing an EV charging station in just a few months.

If you’re looking to get an electric car charger for your home, it’s also worth checking your eligibility for the Government’s Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme. This is where the government provides a grant, which can cover up to 75% of the cost of installing an EV charger at domestic properties across the UK.

The grant cap is £350 per installation (including VAT), and to qualify, you must own, lease, or have ordered a qualifying vehicle. Dedicated off-street parking at your home address is also required.

At Michael White Electrical Services, we pride ourselves on offering some of the most competitive prices for EV charger installations.

Will it take long to install an EV charger?

Not at all! It usually takes no more than half a day to install an EV charging station.

If your fuse box is a long distance from where the charge point station will be, or the cables need to run through internal rooms in your house, it may take slightly longer to complete. But rest assured. Michael White Electrical Services are specialists in the installation of home EV chargers.

We will work quickly and safely, ensuring no sacrifice to the quality and performance of the system – delivering a smooth and efficient installation every time.

Do I need to charge my electric vehicle every night?

In most cases, it’s not necessary to charge your electric car every night.

Many EV drivers plug their car in when they leave it out of habit, and they can relax knowing that they have enough charge should they have to make any unexpected journeys.

Having an EV charging station installed at home allows you to treat your electric vehicle like a mobile phone – keeping it topped up during the day and plugging it in to charge fully overnight.

By charging it overnight, you may be able to take advantage of cheap night-time electricity rates, making it even cheaper to drive.

If you’re worried about overcharging your electric car or wasting electricity, fear not. Once the battery is fully charged, charging should stop automatically whether you unplug it or not.

With that said, not all electric vehicles are the same. To ensure the battery lasts as long as possible, always read your manufacturer’s advice on how to charge your electric vehicle correctly.
